Fire Shut Up In My Bones on PBS

The Terrence Blanchard opera, Fire Shut  Up In My Bones is being broadcast tonight: Friday, April 1st, 9:00pm, on PBS SoCal KOCE-TV, Channel 50; https://www.pbssocal.org/schedule.  This will be a repeat of the Met broadcast from last October.

Watch it, and celebrate the fact that this opera became the first opera composed by an African American to be performed on the stage of the Metropolitan Opera.

YES — George Gershwin was NOT black.  

William Grant Still, known as the 20th century Dean of African American composers, wrote nine operas.

Scott Joplin composed a ragtime opera in 1911, that premiered in 1972.

Harry Lawrence Freeman composed 23 operas.

Mark Fax composed two operas.

Ulysses Kay composed  five operas.

Anthony Davis has composed five operas, so far.
